Every living being will certainly experience death. Yet many people wonder about the meaning behind the time of a person's passing, such as the day they died. One of the most widely held beliefs, though still a matter of question, is that passing away on a Wednesday is a good sign.
Not a few believe that a person who passes away on this day has a special virtue, not much different from passing away on a Friday. To learn the details based on Islamic teaching, you can read the discussion below!
The Virtues of Wednesday
Many Muslims believe that Wednesday is a special day. This is in line with the book titled 1500+ Selected Hadith & Sunnah by Syamsul Rizal Hamid. The book explains that Allah created light on Wednesday.
This is based on a account from Abu Hurairah R.A., that the Messenger of Allah said, "Allah Azza wa Jalla created the earth on Saturday. Allah created the mountains on the earth on Sunday. Allah created trees on Monday, Allah created disliked things on Tuesday. Allah created light on Wednesday. Allah spread the animals on the earth on Thursday. And Allah created Adam on Friday after Asr." (HR. Muslim)
There is also a statement from one of the Imams of the schools of thought, Abu Hanifah. He said, "Because Wednesday is the day light was created and a day of misfortune for the disbelievers, this day is blessed for the believers.”
Another explanation is found in the book by Ipnu R. Noegroho titled The Most Effective Prayers, Remembrance, Litanies, and Islamic Remedies. The book explains that Wednesday is the day or time when prayers are answered, as in the hadith, "On Wednesday, prayers are answered, namely between the Dhuhr and Asr prayers." (HR. Ahmad).
Based on these various evidences, the belief has arisen that Wednesday holds a special virtue. A person who passes away on Wednesday will receive forgiveness and protection from Allah. Those who have passed away are among those who enter paradise.
The Meaning of Passing Away on a Wednesday in Islam
In truth, from the Islamic perspective, there is no authentic evidence establishing that Wednesday is a special day when a person passes away on that day. Moreover, passing away on any other day likewise has no bearing on the fate of the deceased.
Islam in fact teaches us to think well of Allah. Every death is a form of destiny and of Allah's compassion toward His servants. The key point is to prepare faith and righteous deeds until the time comes for the angel Izrail to take the soul.
The Messenger of Allah also said, "Indeed, actions are judged by their endings." (HR. Bukhari). This hadith explains that the day of death does not determine a person's misfortune or fortune, but rather the condition of their faith and deeds while they were alive.
The Importance of Preparing Good Deeds Rather Than Dwelling on the Day
Rather than continually wondering whether passing away on a Wednesday will bring a special virtue or not, it is better to focus on continually gathering rewards and maintaining your faith. Indeed, the Quran clearly instructs us to keep doing righteous deeds, however small they may be.
Every good deed you do will be repaid in full. This is in line with the explanation in Surah Al-Zalzalah, verses 7-8.
"Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it as well."
If, while you are still alive, you have abundant good deeds and stay away from sin, you will receive the results later, regardless of the day you pass away. Whenever that day comes, you will always be ready and gain peace of mind.
How to Attain a Good Ending (Husnul Khotimah)
A Muslim who passes away in a state of husnul khotimah, whether on a Wednesday or any other day, is not a problem. You too can attain this good ending through the following ways:
1. Increasing Acts of Worship
Increasing acts of worship such as fasting, prayer, reciting the Quran, remembrance of God, and giving charity can help a person attain husnul khotimah. Through these acts of worship, your faith and piety will also grow.
2. Steadfastness in Faith
Being consistent or steadfast in faith is also an important foundation for attaining husnul khotimah. You must always remain consistent in guarding your faith and piety until the end of your life. Especially now, when temptations to faith come from many directions, strive to remain firmly holding to the teachings of your religion.
3. Repentance & Increasing Seeking Forgiveness
Sincere repentance and frequently asking Allah for forgiveness for the sins you have committed will cleanse the heart. This will also lead you toward husnul khotimah.
4. Increasing Charity & Ongoing Charity (Amal Jariyah)
Giving charity is not only for earning reward, but also for warding off misfortune or calamity. By giving charity, you will gain deeds that keep flowing, or ongoing charity (amal jariyah) even after you have passed away.
The charity you give can also be adjusted to your ability. For example, giving money to a mosque, donating a copy of the Qur'an, providing waqf land for a mosque or an Islamic boarding school, and so on.
Already Familiar with the Meaning of Dying on a Wednesday?
So, the belief that dying on a Wednesday carries a special meaning actually has no rajih (strong) basis in the Qur'an and hadith. Death can come at any time because it is absolutely Allah's right, but what matters most is what you prepare before that day arrives.
Besides preparing your deeds and faith, you also need to prepare your final resting place. For this, you can make use of burial services and funeral management services from Kamboja. Kamboja will take care of all burial-related needs until everything is complete.
