How to Bury a Cat Properly According to Islamic Teachings

Burying a pet is something you should do with a sense of responsibility, and this includes cats. In Islam, cats are considered a special animal, because the Prophet Muhammad was fond of them. As followers of the Prophet, you should know how to bury a cat according to Islamic law.

By understanding this, when your cat passes away, you will already know how to bury it. Burying a cat properly also shows respect for a creature of Allah, and reflects your care as a Muslim.

How Do You Bury a Cat According to Islamic Law?

Here are 10 proper steps for burying a cat. These steps are in line with Islamic teachings, so you simply need to put them into practice.

1. Make Sure the Cat Has Died

Before burying your cat, it is very important to make sure it has truly died. Especially for a cat that died from an accident or illness, check whether there are truly no signs of life left, including breathing and heartbeat.

2. Clean the Cat's Body

Once you are sure the cat has died, you need to clean its body first. You should do this to show respect for the animal.

You can wipe the cat's body with a clean cloth. Cleaning the body also helps reduce unpleasant odors and rapid decomposition.

3. Prepare the Burial Site

The next step in burying a cat is to make sure the grave site is safe, clean, and does not disturb other people. There are several tips when choosing a location:

  • Avoid burying the cat near water sources, such as rivers or wells, to prevent contamination.
  • Make sure the site is not in a public place or on neighbors' land without permission.
  • If possible, choose a quiet place that will not bother anyone in the future.

4. Dig the Hole and Make Sure It Is Deep Enough

The hole you dig should be deep enough so that the body is not dug up again by other animals, whether dogs or wild animals. It is best for the grave to be at least 1 meter deep.

Digging a deep hole helps prevent the smell of the body from escaping and being noticed by others. Otherwise, the cat's remains could become a serious nuisance.

5. Wrap the Cat

The next step is to wrap the cat. You can wrap it in paper or cloth. You do this so that the cat's body does not touch the soil directly.

Keep in mind that you should not wrap the cat in plastic, because plastic does not break down naturally in the ground.

6. Prepare a Base in the Grave

The sixth step in burying a cat is to prepare a base for you to place inside the hole. As with the previous step, this is intended so that the cat's body does not come into direct contact with the soil.

The base can be two layers, if needed. This also ensures the cat's body truly does not touch the ground.

7. Place the Cat with Full Respect

When you place the cat into the hole, make sure you do it slowly and with full respect. There are no strict rules about the cat's body position. However, what matters most is laying it in its natural sleeping position, to reflect respect.

8. Prayer and Intention

Another step in burying a cat that you should pay attention to is to begin praying. You may recite a prayer in your own language. Cats are not beings who will be held accountable by Allah, but the prayer you offer is an expression of your acknowledgment of the greatness of God Almighty as the Creator.

One prayer you can offer is: "O Allah, grant this cat a fitting place. I ask Your forgiveness if, during the time I cared for it, I fell short in many ways."

9. Fill the Hole

When you have finished praying, it is time to fill the hole. Cover the grave with soil, then level the ground so there are no gaps that would allow the cat's body to be dug up again.

It is also a good idea to mark the grave site. You can use a small plant or place a stone on top.

10. Keep the Grave Site Clean

Afterward, you need to make sure the area around the cat's grave stays clean. Do not leave behind any items or leftover materials that could pollute the environment.

3 Things You Should Avoid

When burying a cat, there are 3 things you should avoid, including

  • Disposing of the body carelessly: Make sure you do not dispose of the body carelessly, such as in a trash bin or a river. This would pollute the environment and certainly harm others.
  • Treating the body carelessly: Avoid actions such as throwing the body away or even burning it. This shows a lack of respect for a creature of Allah.
  • Ignoring hygiene: Also make sure the burial process does not contaminate the environment or create an unpleasant smell.

The Benefits of Burying a Cat Properly

Burying a cat properly is not merely a sign of responsibility and affection; it also brings many benefits, such as the following:

  • Preventing disease: An unburied cat carcass can become a source of disease for both humans and other animals.
  • Protecting the environment: When you bury a cat, you help keep the environment clean and prevent pollution.
  • Teaching the value of care: This can serve as an example for others, especially children, of how important it is to respect living beings and protect the environment.
