Prayers for a Deceased Father and How to Recite Them

Losing a father forever is surely one of the heaviest moments in life. The figure who was a protector, a place to seek advice, and the family's pillar has now returned to Allah SWT. Although you can no longer meet him in person, a child's love for their father does not have to simply stop.

In Islam, there are many ways to remain devoted to a deceased father. One of them is reciting prayers for a deceased father, asking Allah SWT for forgiveness, and performing various good deeds whose reward is hoped to benefit the departed.

Prayers for a Deceased Father

There are several prayers a child can offer for their father who has passed away. These prayers contain requests for forgiveness, mercy, and goodness for those who have departed, including a beloved father. Here are prayers for a deceased father in Arabic, Latin transliteration, along with their meanings:

1. A Prayer for a Deceased Father to Be Forgiven

The first prayer contains a request for forgiveness for Muslim men and women, believing men and women, both those who are still living and those who have passed away. In it, we also specifically pray for our father, mother, grandfathers, grandmothers, teachers, and those who have been good to us.

Allāhummaghfir lil-muslimīna wal-muslimāt, wal-mu’minīna wal-mu’mināt, al-aḥyā’i minhum wal-amwāt, min masyāriqil-arḍi ilā maghāribihā, barrihā wa baḥrihā, khuṣūṣan ilā ābā’inā wa ummahātinā wa ajdādinā wa jaddātinā wa asātidzatinā wa mu’allimīnā, wa liman aḥsana ilainā wa li-aṣḥābil-ḥuqūqi ‘alainā.

Meaning: “O Allah, forgive the Muslim men and women, the believing men and women, both the living and the dead, spread from the east to the west, on land and at sea. Especially our fathers, our mothers, our grandfathers, our grandmothers, our teachers and instructors, those who have been good to us, and those who have rights over us.”

By reciting this prayer, you can ask Allah SWT for forgiveness for your father while also praying for family members and others who have contributed to your life.

2. A Prayer Asking for Mercy and Forgiveness for the Dwellers of the Graves

After reciting the first prayer, you may continue with a prayer containing requests for forgiveness, compassion, and the mercy of Allah SWT for those who have passed away.

Allāhummaghfir lahum, warḥamhum, wa ‘āfihim, wa'fu ‘anhum. Allāhumma anzilir-raḥmata wal-maghfirata wasy-syafā’ata ‘alā ahlil-qubūri min ahli lā ilāha illallāhu Muḥammadur-rasūlullāh.

Meaning: “O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them, grant them well-being, and pardon them. O Allah, send down mercy, forgiveness, and intercession upon the dwellers of the graves who are among those who testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

You may recite this prayer as an expression of hope that your father and the Muslims who have passed away will receive mercy and forgiveness from Allah SWT.

3. A Closing Prayer After Praying for a Deceased Father

After reciting the prayers above, you may close with the comprehensive prayer, blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad SAW, and the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, according to the practice commonly followed.

Rabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanah, wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanah, wa qinā ‘ażāban-nār.

Subḥāna rabbika rabbil-’izzati ‘ammā yaṣifūn, wa salāmun ‘alal-mursalīn, wa ṣallallāhu ‘alā sayyidinā Muḥammadin wa ‘alā ālihi wa ṣaḥbihi wa sallam, wal-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbil-’ālamīn.

After that, you may recite Surah Al-Fatihah.

Meaning: “Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

“Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Might, far above what they describe. Peace be upon the messengers. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, his family, and his companions. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.”

This closing prayer expresses the hope that Allah SWT grants goodness in this world and the Hereafter, and serves as the conclusion of the series of prayers you offer.

4. A Prayer for Father and Mother to Receive the Mercy of Allah SWT

In addition to the series above, there is also a prayer you can recite to ask for the forgiveness and compassion of Allah SWT for both parents.

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Rabbighfir lī wa liwālidayya warḥamhumā kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīrā.

Meaning: “My Lord, forgive me and my parents, and have mercy on them as they raised me when I was young.”

This prayer appears in the Qur'an, Surah Nuh verse 28, for the part asking forgiveness for oneself and one's parents. The part about compassion for parents, warḥamhumā kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīrā, appears in Surah Al-Isra' verse 24.

This prayer is suitable to practice as an act of devotion to both father and mother, whether they are still alive or have passed away.

Good Deeds for a Deceased Father

Besides reciting prayers for a deceased father, there are several good deeds a child can perform as an act of devotion and love for their father. Even though a father can no longer accompany us in person, that does not mean we cannot do something beneficial for him.

A. Praying for Father to Receive the Mercy of Allah SWT

One form of devotion that can be continued is praying for your father, that Allah SWT forgives his sins, grants him mercy, and places him in an honorable position in His presence. This prayer can be recited after prayer or at any time you remember the departed.

B. Giving Ongoing Charity in Your Father's Name

You may also give charity in your father's name, for example by endowing a copy of the Qur'an, giving aid to those in need, or helping build a mosque.

Charity that provides lasting benefit can be a form of goodness whose reward is hoped to flow to your father by the permission of Allah SWT.

C. Settling Father's Debts, Including Unpaid Fasting Obligations

If your father left behind financial debts, the family should strive to settle them according to Islamic provisions. Financial debts should be taken care of before the distribution of inheritance.

Meanwhile, for unpaid fasting obligations, the ruling depends on the cause and the circumstances of your father when he passed away. You may consult a religious teacher to learn how to make up the fasts in accordance with Shari'a.

D. Maintaining Ties with Your Father's Family and Friends

Maintaining good relationships with relatives and friends of your father is also a form of devotion after he has passed away.

You can visit them, ask after their wellbeing, or help when they need assistance.

Besides strengthening family bonds, this practice is also a way of continuing the goodness your father built during his lifetime.

E. Being a Righteous Child and Continuing to Do Good

In a hadith narrated by Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad SAW explained that one of the deeds whose benefit continues after a person dies is the prayer of a righteous child.

Therefore, keep improving your worship, maintaining your character, and doing good to others. Do not forget to always pray for your father, that he receives the forgiveness and mercy of Allah SWT.

F. Reciting the Qur'an for Father

Reciting the Qur'an can be a deed to draw closer to Allah SWT while also praying for your deceased father. You may recite surahs you have memorized, such as Al-Fatihah, Al-Ikhlas, or other surahs, then ask Allah to grant mercy to the departed.

Regarding gifting the reward of Qur'an recitation to someone who has died, there are differing opinions among scholars, so you may follow the religious guidance you believe in.
