Signs of a Good Death (Husnul Khotimah) in Islam

Dying in a state of husnul khotimah is the hope of every believer, yet not everyone is fortunate enough to be granted this condition. For this reason, many Muslims have begun to deepen their understanding and build up their provisions for the hereafter.

We hope that Allah SWT grants us a good ending and hastens us into His paradise. But do you know what the signs are that such an ending may come to pass?

What Is Husnul Khotimah?

In Arabic, husnul can be understood as good or something good. Khotimah refers to an ending or conclusion. Combined, the phrase means a good ending. The ending in this sense refers to the condition in which a Muslim passes away.

Husnul khotimah is a secret and a prerogative of Allah. As stated in the Qur'an, Surah Luqman verse 34, the Hour, the rain, what is in the womb, what will happen tomorrow, and the moment of death are known only to Allah, the All-Knowing.

Therefore, no one can know or control these matters. For this reason, people can only prepare as well as they can, through good deeds, avoiding what is forbidden, and carrying out the commands of Allah.

Signs of a Muslim Who Dies in a State of Husnul Khotimah

As mentioned earlier, whether a person dies in a good state is a secret of Allah. However, there are several signs associated with a Muslim dying in a good state. Here are some of them:

1. Being Given the Opportunity to Recite the Shahada

The first sign that a Muslim may die in a good state is being given the chance to recite the shahada in their final moments. This is in line with the words of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in a hadith narrated by Bukhari:

“Whoever testifies that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partner, and that Muhammad is His messenger, and that Isa is a servant of Allah and the son of His maidservant, and His word which He conveyed to Maryam and a spirit from Him.

And testifies that Paradise and Hell are true, Allah will admit him into Paradise through whichever of its eight gates He wills.” (Hadith narrated by Bukhari).

This hadith shows that if you die after having recited the shahada beforehand, there is a good chance you die in a state of husnul khotimah.

2. Being Given the Opportunity to Recite the Tahlil

In addition to the shahada, the Prophet SAW also stated that a person dies in a good state when, before death, they say the tahlil (La ilaha illallah). This is in line with a hadith narrated by Abu Dawud, which says:

“Whoever's last words are La ilaha illallah will enter Paradise.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud)

The tahlil phrase means “There is no god but Allah,” and so these are the words that people around a dying person usually whisper to them as they approach death. The aim is to give them the chance to recite these two noble phrases before their soul leaves the body.

3. A Mother Who Dies While Giving Birth

Another sign of husnul khotimah is the death of a mother who is struggling through childbirth. It is commonly known that childbirth is a difficult process, a moment between life and death. Scholars have even likened this condition to the struggle of warriors.

This is in line with the words of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in a hadith narrated by Ahmad, which states that among those who die as martyrs are those killed in the way of Allah (referring to war under certain conditions), those who die from plague, those who die from stomach illness, and women who die while giving birth.

This statement is further supported by a saying of the Prophet SAW, from Ubadah bin Ash-Shamit (may Allah be pleased with him), which reads:

“And a woman who dies because of her child (in childbirth) is among the martyrs; and the child will pull her by the umbilical cord into Paradise.”

The word “dies” here can be understood as a miscarriage during the process of childbirth. These two hadiths reinforce the view that a mother who dies during childbirth is granted husnul khotimah.

4. Dying with a Sweating Forehead

Be grateful if your loved one dies with a sweating forehead, as this may indicate that they passed away in a good state. This may happen because of a sense of shame over the sins committed during their lifetime, as explained in the following hadith narrated by Tirmidhi:

As Abdullah bin Buraidah explained from his father, the Messenger of Allah SAW said, “A believer will die with sweat on his brow.” (Narrated by Tirmidhi).

Scholars have explained this hadith as referring to sweat from the forehead running down to the brow. This hadith has also been recognized by scholars as sahih (authentic).

5. Dying on a Thursday Night or Friday

Another sign that a person may have died in a state of husnul khotimah is a Muslim who dies on Thursday night or Friday. This is in line with a hadith narrated by Ahmad, which explains:

“No Muslim (whether man or woman, child or adult) dies on a Friday or Friday night, except that Allah protects him from the trial of the grave.” (Narrated by Ahmad).

The trial of the grave refers to the test Allah gives through two angels of the grave, who ask a person about their faith in the afterlife: who their Lord is, who their prophet is, what their religion is, what their book is, and what they believe in.

6. Defending Oneself Against Robbers

Although defending oneself against robbers may today lead to criminal charges for assault, in this hadith the Prophet SAW said that a person killed while defending themselves against robbers receives the reward of martyrdom. This is in line with a hadith narrated by Abu Dawud, which reads:

“Whoever is killed defending his property is a martyr. Whoever is killed defending his family is a martyr. And whoever is killed defending his blood or his religion is a martyr!” (Narrated by Abu Dawud).
