Get to Know the 7 Heroes' Cemeteries Scattered Across Indonesia

Every time National Heroes Day is commemorated, the Heroes' Cemeteries are never quiet with visitors. Many hold various events to pray for and remember the contributions of the heroes. Beyond ceremonies, flower-scattering events are also often a routine on certain days.

But do you know who is entitled to be buried in a heroes' cemetery? And which areas have heroes' cemeteries? Read the following explanation.

What is a Heroes' Cemetery?

A Heroes' Cemetery (TMP) is a burial place specifically dedicated to heroes or figures considered to have made great contributions to a nation's history, independence, or development.

A TMP is usually a respected and well-maintained place, often becoming a destination for historical tourism, and a symbol of appreciation for the heroes' contributions.

In Indonesia, a Heroes' Cemetery (TMP) is a burial place officially established by the government to honor and commemorate the freedom fighters and independence heroes who fell in the struggle against colonizers, whether in the war of independence or other conflicts.

TMPs often serve as sites for pilgrimage and commemorative ceremonies held on historic dates, such as Heroes Day.

TMPs are usually equipped with monuments or memorial towers that honor the heroes, and their graves are often decorated with flags, wreaths, and other tokens of respect.

These places hold important historical and symbolic value in a nation's culture and history, and often become centers of national pride.

Requirements for Burial in a Heroes' Cemetery

Not only heroes are permitted to be buried in a TMP; people who have made contributions to the nation and state may also be eligible under the special requirements set out in Government Regulation (PP) Number 35 of 2010. Some of the requirements are:

  • Indonesian Citizens (WNI) who hold the title of National Hero.
  • Indonesian Citizens who have received the Star of the Republic Honor Award.
  • Indonesian Citizens who have received the Star of Mahaputera Honor Award.
  • TNI soldiers, Polri personnel, retired personnel, Wredatama, and civil servants (PNS).
  • Citizens who fell in battle in operational areas against enemies of the state.
