Understanding Premonitions of Death: Are They Real?

Premonitions of death remain a open question. Many people believe in premonitions or certain signs before death, but there is no strong scientific explanation for them yet. In Islam, death is part of destiny, which is known only to Allah SWT, as stated in the Qur'an.

Still, some theories suggest these premonitions may arise from subconscious perception or deep emotional connections. In the article below, we will discuss premonitions before death. Read on to learn more!

What Is a Premonition of Death?

A premonition of death is a strong feeling or intuition about dying, whether it concerns oneself or someone else. Usually, this feeling may come through dreams, visions, sounds, smells, or unusual physical sensations. For example:

  • Dreaming of meeting someone who is about to die;
  • Suddenly picturing that person;
  • Words that sound strange;
  • A sudden change in behavior; or
  • Giving advice.

Some people experience these premonitions only a few hours to a few days before death, although some feel them long before. You do not need to be a psychic to experience something like this, since these feelings sometimes come for no clear reason.

Even so, experts consider premonitions a subjective phenomenon without a solid scientific basis. Regardless of this debate, premonitions are often regarded as an emotional or spiritual sign that accompanies the process of facing death.

Studies on Premonitions of Death

A premonition of death does not always mean a person will die, but it can arise after trauma or an accident. A survey by the National Center for Biotechnology Information of 302 trauma patients found that 95% of patients reported feeling a premonition of death.

In addition, 44% of patients were able to predict the outcome of their situation, while 50% linked the premonition to a higher risk of death. As many as 57% believed the premonition was influenced by the patient's will or desire to survive.

Meanwhile, the Journal of Clinical Oncology reported on the premonition of death in a woman with incurable metastatic stomach cancer. She calmly announced her death before its time came. Although her condition was stable and she was scheduled to go home for hospice hospice.

She said, "I will not go home, I will go somewhere else". The medical team, suspecting mild delirium, dismissed her words. However, after receiving the last rites, she passed away a few hours later, in line with her wish not to die in front of her family.

This experience is a reminder that premonitions of death, though rare, may happen. Studies show that little literature addresses them, although similar stories have been reported since the 19th century.

This phenomenon highlights the importance of attending to the spiritual dimension of patients in palliative care (care for patients who cannot be cured).

Theories About Premonitions of Death

Below are 2 theories about premonitions of death:

1. The First Theory

Quoted from Willed, premonitions of death are often associated with intuition or phenomena that are difficult to explain scientifically. Some theories suggest these premonitions may come from your subconscious mind, which picks up subtle patterns or signs around you that escape your conscious awareness.

The brain then processes this information into a premonition or a dream. There is also a view that psychic ability plays a role in premonitions, although this view is less accepted in the scientific community.

Even so, research on premonitions is still limited, but the phenomenon continues to attract attention and could become a more in-depth field of study in the future.

2. The Second Theory

The next theory about premonitions of death is the theory of precognition. Precognition is the ability to perceive future events in an illogical way, often linked to close emotional bonds.

Studies show that precognition involving friends, partners, or family accounts for 80-85%, while the rest involve strangers. These phenomena usually relate to bad events such as accidents, disasters, illness, or death.

Interestingly, precognition rarely appears in relation to one's own death, which is thought to be because the ego protects itself from major trauma. However, mainstream psychiatry regards precognition as an illusion or pseudoscience, since it conflicts with the principles of causality and physics.

Precognition is closer to a prediction based on information and current conditions processed by the brain. Although it happens often, many precognition claims are general or flexible, making them easy to adjust to fit reality.

In the end, although the human brain is remarkable, only God knows for certain when and how death will come.

Premonitions of Death in Islam

A premonition of a person's death has no basis in the Qur'an or the hadith. In QS. Luqman verse 34, Allah SWT affirms that only Allah knows when and where a person will die.

"No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware."

QS. An-Nisa' verse 78 also states that death cannot be avoided, even if you take refuge in a strong fortress.

"Wherever you are, death will find you, even if you are within towering and fortified walls."

Death is a secret of Allah SWT that reminds you to always draw closer to Him, strengthen your faith, improve yourself, and seek forgiveness. By remembering death, you can live your life more wisely and prepare yourself for the hereafter.
