Ways to Continue Honoring Your Parents After They Have Passed Away

Every parent in the world pours their love into their children and gives them the very best they can. For that reason, it is only right for a child to honor their parents. Even after a parent has passed away, a child can still show their devotion to both of them.

The Duty to Honor Parents Who Have Passed Away

Every child is obligated to honor their parents, and there is no reason at all that permits a child to disobey or oppose them. Even honoring one's parents parents is one form of good deed that brings extraordinary reward.

However, you should know that no one lives forever in this world, parents included. There will come a time when the parents we love dearly will meet their Creator and leave us all. Such a moment will surely break the heart and leave a deep wound of grief.

Yet this does not mean that once your parents have passed away, you no longer have any chance to honor them. Whether they are alive or have passed away, the duty of a child to honor their parents must still be carried out.

Many people do not understand how to honor parents who have passed away. In fact, honoring deceased parents is still important, so that they may continually be granted forgiveness and protection by God. It is not only through prayer, but honoring them can be done in many ways.

In one narration, the Prophet Muhammad was asked about how to honor parents who have passed away. He then answered:

"There are still good deeds that can be done, namely praying for one's parents, asking for forgiveness for their sins, fulfilling their promises, maintaining ties of kinship with their relatives, and honoring their friends." (H.R. Abu Dawud).

The hadith above explains that a parent's departure should not make us forget to always honor them. Therefore, do not dwell too deeply in sorrow when your parents pass away, because there is a way to cope with feelings of sadness you have as a result of losing them both, namely by still being able to honor them.

How to Honor Parents Who Have Passed Away

When your parents have passed away and you feel you were not able to devote yourself fully to them while they were alive, you can do several things to continue honoring them, including:

1. Continually Sending Prayers for Your Parents

One form of a child's devotion to their parents is praying for them, both while they are alive and after they have passed away. The prayer we can offer once our parents have passed away is to ask for forgiveness for their sins.

In addition, you can also ask God to grant your parents the best place in His presence, and to ask that God give them protection.
Although you can no longer physically meet your parents, your heart will always remain connected to them through prayer.

2. Fulfilling Promises or Settling Your Parents' Debts

Another form of devotion you can carry out when your parents have passed away is to fulfill their promises or pay off their debts. When parents pass away while still in debt, it is the child's obligation to settle it, as a way of easing their path to the hereafter.

Unpaid debts or promises can make the path of one's parents even heavier. Therefore, if you do not know whether your parents had any debts, promptly ask those closest to them or people who may have lent them money, and settle them without delay.

3. Maintaining Family Ties with Relatives and Friends of Your Parents

As a child who has lost their parents, maintaining bonds with extended family and your parents' friends becomes your responsibility. You can keep these ties of kinship by making the time to visit their homes.

You can also show your care for them by often keeping in touch, either in person or through social media. Staying connected with your parents' family and friends is one way a child honors parents who have passed away.

4. Giving Charity or Doing Good Deeds in Your Parents' Name

Every person who gives charity is building savings for the hereafter, because it nurtures goodness and earns reward. Furthermore, as human beings, we should treat one another kindly and with humanity.

Even though your parents have passed away, it is still good for you as a child to give charity in their name, as a form of ongoing charity (amal jariyah) for both of them. In addition, every good deed performed by a child also brings a share of reward to the parents.

Moreover, the wealth you use to give charity is not diminished, but will be repaid by God many times over. So never hesitate to give charity, because giving can ease one's provision and is a form of gratitude to God.

5. Always Protecting Your Parents' Good Name

Another form of devotion you can carry out when your parents have passed away is to continue protecting their good name. Safeguarding the reputation of one's parents is a child's duty.
You can protect your parents' good name by keeping their faults private, presenting a good image, not spreading their shortcomings to others, and preventing slander against parents who have passed away. Protecting the good name of your parents is the same as protecting their feelings.

6. Visiting Your Parents' Graves

One opportunity for a child to honor parents who have passed away is by visiting their grave. Making a pilgrimage to your parents' grave can ease the longing you feel. It is one way to remember parents who are no longer with us.

During a visit, besides praying, you can also clean and look after your parents' grave so that it always looks neat and not neglected. Moreover, a clean grave will be far from appearing eerie.
