Funeral Preparation: Procedures, Tools, and Materials

Preparing a body for burial plays an important role in paying a final respect to the deceased and in supporting the family left behind.

This process involves a series of actions, from the physical preparation of the body to coordinating the logistics of transporting the deceased to their final resting place. In this article, we will discuss several aspects of funeral preparation.

What Is Funeral Preparation?

Funeral preparation is the process of preparing and caring for the body of a person who has passed away, including cleansing, wrapping in a burial shroud, and carrying out specific rituals before the body is buried or interred in accordance with religious teachings or particular beliefs.

This process is carried out with deep respect to give the deceased a final tribute.

Tools and Materials for Funeral Preparation

The tools and materials used in funeral preparation can vary depending on religious belief, culture, and local practice. Below are some common tools and materials often used in the process:

1. Preparation Table

A special table used to place the body during the preparation process.

2. Water and Soap

Used to cleanse the body with great care and respect.

3. Special Clothing

Those preparing the body usually wear protective clothing or special uniforms to maintain personal hygiene and to honor the process.

4. Burial Shroud

5. Fragrance or Perfumed Oil

Used to give the body a pleasant scent.

Used to cover the face of the body in accordance with norms and customs.

9. Eye and Mouth Covers

May be used according to particular religious or cultural practices.

10. Hygiene Equipment

Such as gloves, masks, and others to protect the preparers and keep the process hygienic.

Funeral Preparation Procedures

The funeral preparation procedure involves a series of steps carried out with dignity and attention to the body of the deceased. Below are the general procedures in funeral preparation:

A. Preparing the Space

Make sure the preparation area is clean and suitable for carrying out the process. This space is usually equipped with a preparation table and other necessary facilities.

B. Preparing the Preparers

Those preparing the body should wear protective clothing, including gloves and a mask, to maintain personal hygiene and carry out their duties with proper ethics. Eye protection may also be used if needed.

C. Cleansing the Body

Gently close the eyes of the body if they remain open, and cover the ears and mouth with cotton and gauze. The body is then cleansed carefully using water, soap, and special cleaning tools.

This process is carried out with respect and gentleness. The preparers will also remove any residue that may remain in the abdomen by gently pressing on the stomach.

D. Bathing the Body

If in accordance with tradition or religion, bathing the body may be carried out as part of the preparation. This bathing is often done with great care and deep respect.

A male body is bathed by male preparers and likewise a female body by female preparers, except in emergency situations. In addition, the preparers will also perform ablution (wudhu) on the body.

The body is washed starting from the head, then the right side, followed by the left side, and continuing over the whole body until clean. Once bathing is complete, the body is dried with a towel.

E. Wrapping in the Burial Shroud

After the body is clean, the burial shroud is put on according to the procedures of a particular belief or religion. There are several rules for shrouding the body, especially in Islam, such as men being wrapped in 3 layers of cloth and women in 5 layers.

The recommended number of shroud layers is an odd number. Next, any openings in the body are closed with a sufficient amount of cotton. After the body is shrouded, a special prayer is usually recited.

F. Applying Fragrance or Perfumed Oil

Some communities adorn the body with fragrance or perfumed oil to give a pleasant scent and to honor the body that has passed away. This is usually placed on the shroud, such as adding camphor or other fragrances.

G. Performing the Funeral Prayer

The funeral prayer (salat) may be performed by a body care service, but it is still carried out together with the family of the deceased. There are several procedures for the funeral prayer, such as reciting the prayer while standing if able.

H. Arranging the Body

The body is arranged with great care and respect on the preparation table, in accordance with religious or cultural norms.

I. Burial of the Body

After the preparation process is complete, the body may be handed over to the family for burial or a farewell ceremony according to each person's beliefs and traditions.

There are several burial procedures, such as the Sunnah, and the obligation to carry the body with a bier or with four men carrying it. For women in particular, it is recommended to spread a cloth over the grave.

Follow the Funeral Preparation Procedures Correctly!

When the funeral preparation process is carried out with respect, care, and appreciation for the life that has passed, families and the community can feel the solemnity of a farewell that is fitting for the deceased, and find peace in facing the loss.
