Why Is Dying on a Friday Considered Special? Here Is the Answer!

As mortal beings, humans have only a limited time in this world and cannot predict when they will pass away, as this is a secret of Allah SWT. In Islam, dying on a Friday is considered a special virtue.

People think this way because Friday is considered a blessed day compared to other days. But whether that is authentic something you should believe? If you are still unsure or in doubt, you can read the discussion in the following article.

3 Virtues of Dying on a Friday

Dying in a good state, or husnul khatimah (a good ending), is the dream of every Muslim. Moreover, if one truly dies on Friday, which is said to be a blessed day, then it is even better. Here are some virtues of passing away on a Friday that you can review and examine for their accuracy.

1. Freedom from the Punishment of the Grave

A Muslim who passes away on Friday or on Friday night is one of the signs of husnul khatimah. This virtue is also mentioned in a hadith narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi, which affirms that a Muslim who dies on Friday will be protected from the trial of the grave. Here is the text of the hadith:

ما من مسلم يموت يوم الجمعة أو ليلة الجمعة إلا وقاه الله تعالى فتنة القبر

“No Muslim dies on a Friday or Friday night except that Allah protects him from the trial of the grave.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi).

Based on the wording of this hadith, a Muslim who dies on Friday night or Friday can be kept safe from the trial of the grave. However, you should not immediately use it as a firm reference. According to al-Tirmidhi, the hadith above is gharib, meaning its chain of narration is not continuous or relies on only one narrator.

Besides that, there are other reports discussing the virtue of dying on Friday. For example, the narration from Humaid from Iyas bin Bukair, “Whoever dies on a Friday will be recorded as receiving the reward of a martyr and will be safe from the punishment of the grave.”

However, these hadiths have not reached the level of authentic according to Shaykh Muhammad Anwar Shah al-Kashmiri. Al-Kashmiri also said:

ما صح الحديث في فضل موت يوم الجمعة ، ولو صح بالفرض لكان الفضل من عدم السؤال لمن مات يوم الجمعة لا من مات قبل وأخر دفنه إلى يوم الجمعة

“The hadith concerning the virtue of dying on a Friday has not reached the rank of authentic; even if we assume it were authentic, the virtue of not being questioned by the angels would apply to someone who dies on a Friday, not to someone who died on an earlier day and whose burial was delayed until Friday.” (Muhammad Anwar Shah ibn Mu’azzam Shah al-Kashmiri, al-‘Arf al-Shadhi, vol. 2, p. 452).

2. The Best Day for Muslims

For Muslims, Friday is the best day of the week. On this day, Allah SWT answers the prayers of His servants at certain times. From Abu Hurairah, the Messenger of Allah SAW said,

“Indeed, on Friday there is a moment when, if a Muslim servant prays and asks Allah for something at that time, Allah will grant it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured with his hand to illustrate how brief that moment is.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

This is why Friday holds a greater virtue than other days. And if someone passes away on a Friday, most people will regard it as a death with a good ending.

However, even though signs of husnul khatimah such as dying on a Friday exist, you also need to consider a person's deeds throughout their life. So, it is not based on the day of death alone.

For this reason, Muslims should make the most of their good deeds while they are still alive, by obeying the commands of Allah SWT and avoiding His prohibitions. Those good deeds will become your provision in the hereafter.

3. Entering Paradise

If you wish to enter Paradise, there are several efforts we can make, such as doing good, avoiding what Allah SWT has forbidden, and obeying all His commands. In addition, a Muslim who dies on Friday may also enter Paradise, based on a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah RA, in which the Messenger of Allah said:

خَيرُ يومٍ طَلَعتْ عليه الشمسُ يومَ الجُمُعةِ ، فيه خُلِقَ آدمُ ، وفِيه أُدْخِلَ الجنةَ ، وفيه أُخْرِجَ مِنها ، ولا تَقومُ الساعةُ إِلَّا في يومِ الجُمعةِ

Meaning: “The best day on which the sun rises is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was admitted into Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it. The final hour will not come on any day other than Friday.”

However, whether someone enters Paradise is not determined simply by dying on a particular day. This is because, in the end, only Allah SWT knows and has the right to admit a servant into His Paradise.

So, what we as human beings can do is strive. Do not tire of doing good and being beneficial to others, because no one ever knows when death will come. For this reason, you and all of us can only make our best efforts throughout life to earn the pleasure of Allah SWT.
