Funeral Services Catholic funerals in Indonesia follow their own procedures and customs for laying a deceased person to rest. From washing the body to baptism and burial, everything has been arranged in a particular way by the event organizer funeral Kamboja with funeral costs that are relatively affordable.
In essence, the burial process for a Catholic follows much the same pattern as for other religions. However, Catholics also have their own customs for burying the deceased. These are the Catholic burial customs, among others, as follows!
Catholic Funeral Procedures
Let's get straight to it. Here are the procedures and customs for a Catholic burial, in line with church standards in Indonesia:
1. Washing the Body
Before the body is placed in the coffin, it will of course first go through the washing process. This rite aims to ensure the body is clean in its final moments.
The washing of the body is usually carried out by the family or closest relatives. However, if you do not feel strong enough to perform this washing, you may also entrust the process to Jakarta funeral service staff who have experience in body care.
Once the body has been washed, it will then be wrapped with a body preservative. The purpose is to neutralize germs and bacteria on the body during the mourning period for relatives and family.
2. Wrapping the Body in a Suit or Gown
After the body has been washed, the next step in the Catholic funeral process is wrapping the body. In the Christian tradition, a suit is dressed on a male deceased.
For a female deceased, a white gown is used. When dressing the body, the family may place items the deceased cherished during their lifetime into the coffin.
These items are usually a ring, necklace, bracelet, or wristwatch.
3. Opening the Service with the Sign of the Cross
The next step in the Catholic funeral customs and procedures is opening the service with the sign of the cross. During this opening, the family and the priest also offer words of greeting and an opening prayer.
After that, the priest opens the service with the blessing of the grave and the baptism.
For the blessing of the grave, the priest will read the words of Scripture as follows:
"Lord Jesus, we ask You in the name of the Father and the Holy Spirit, to purify the body of our brother/sister. So that Your servant may rise with You and live a beautiful life forever."
Then, the congregation present at this service will say "Amen" to the words of the minister or priest.
4. Placing the Coffin into the Grave
After the priest opens the service with the sign of the cross, the Catholic funeral continues with lowering the coffin into the grave. The lowering coffin is accompanied by words from the priest or minister. The words of the priest are as follows:
"In the name of God, You have called our brother/sister back to You. Therefore, we return this body into Your embrace. May the Lord Jesus receive this body in peace and raise it to a new, eternal and everlasting life.".
Meanwhile, the congregation present at this burial will again say "Amen" to the words of the priest or minister.
Also, during the lowering of the body into the grave, relatives/family are permitted to scatter flowers as a final mark of respect.
5. The Priest Sprinkles the Coffin
Once the coffin has been lowered into the grave, the priest will sprinkle it with holy water. As in the first and second steps, in this third stage of the Catholic funeral the priest prays while sprinkling the coffin.
The priest's words during this stage are as follows:
"When he was baptized, this body was united with the spirit of Christ and died together in Your way, Lord. Brothers and sisters, this body will now live with Christ. May he live a new life under the protection of Jesus Christ.".
Then the faithful once again say "Amen" to the words of the priest or pastor.
6. The Incensing of the Body
The next step in the burial of a Catholic is the incensing of the body. During this procession, the priest incenses the body with special fragrances, so that the body is fragrant as it comes before the Lord Jesus.
In addition, during the incensing, the priest or pastor also recites a prayer:
"May the prayers we offer accompany our brother/sister on every step of the long journey into the house of the Father.".
The faithful present will again say "Amen" to the words of the priest.
7. The Final Sprinkling of Flowers
The seventh step of a Catholic funeral is the scattering of flowers. Once the coffin has been incensed by the priest, the priest scatters flowers over the coffin, saying:
"May this divine flower, which we plant in the coffin of Your servant, bloom like a fragrant blossom and fill every corner of the heavenly garden.".
Then, the faithful present will again say "Amen" to the words of the priest or pastor.
8. Lowering the Coffin into the Grave
After the procession above, the coffin is then lowered into the grave. At this point, the priest or pastor leading the Catholic funeral says the following:
"Created from the earth, humanity will surely return to the earth. May Christ heal the wounds of our brother/sister in the joy of those who have gone before us.".
Then, the faithful present say "Amen" to the prayer and words of the priest.
9. Making the Sign of the Cross Over the Coffin
In this procession, the priest leading the funeral places a sign of the cross over the grave, while praying:
"My brother/sister, enter into eternal life, bearing victory in Christ. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, most high.".
Then, the faithful again say "Amen" to the words of the priest.
10. Closing Prayer
Finally, the Catholic funeral reaches the closing prayer. In this procession, the priest concludes the funeral and offers the prayer:
"Lord, grant him eternal rest." The faithful respond: "Let perpetual light shine upon him.".
Then the leader prays again: "May all who have died rest in peace."
Finally, the faithful again say "Amen" to the priest's prayer, and the burial of the body is complete.
