Indonesia's Luxury Cemeteries: A Guide to Your Options

A cemetery is where those who have passed away are laid to rest. For that reason, the atmosphere around it is usually associated with silence, emptiness, eeriness, and even fear. Surprisingly, though, there are several luxury cemeteries in Indonesia with serene surroundings and complete facilities.

However, not everyone can afford a plot, because the prices are extraordinary. Some cost billions of rupiah just to secure one of the plots in these cemeteries. Naturally, this makes things quite difficult for middle- and lower-income families, as these places are only within reach of the wealthy.

7 Luxury Cemeteries with Complete and Elite Facilities

When it comes to luxury cemeteries, you may have a strong wish to buy one of their plots. But since there is more than one option, you need to make the decision carefully. It's not only about the cost you need to consider, but also the distance, facilities, taxes, and so on.

Among the many cemeteries in Jakarta and other cities, some are known for their luxury. Although expensive, this hasn't discouraged people from wanting to buy into them. Here are 7 luxury cemeteries with complete and elite facilities:

1. Taman Kenangan Lestari

Lestari Memorial Park, or Taman Kenangan Lestari, is one of the elite cemeteries in Indonesia. It is located on Jalan Kuta Tandingan, Margakaya, Karawang Barat, Karawang Regency.

People in the surrounding area are likely already familiar with its scenery. Green lawns and a range of complete facilities are among the hallmarks of Kenangan Lestari.

This cemetery offers several types of plots. A single lot measuring 2x6 meters is priced at around IDR 27.8 million. A double lot measuring 4x6 meters costs around IDR 55.6 million, and a family lot measuring 8x12 meters costs around IDR 192.4 million.

The price is indeed high, but it is in line with the upkeep. Even for older graves, staff continue to maintain them as they would newer ones.

As a result, Taman Kenangan Lestari does not give off any eerie impression at all. If you are interested, you can purchase one of its plots soon.

2. San Diego Hills

Who doesn't know San Diego Hills, one of the cemeteries in Central Jakarta that serves as the final resting place for officials and celebrities. Almost everyone knows its name because it often appears on television. Especially when an important person passes away, they are most likely headed to San Diego Hills.

What makes this luxury cemetery so expensive? Apart from its spacious grounds, the grave maintenance alone is very meticulous. You won't find overgrown grass or litter across the burial area, because staff pay close attention to keeping the surroundings beautiful.

San Diego Hills offers several options for people who wish to bury their loved ones there. The cheapest option, for a single grave, can reach around IDR 40 million. For the most expensive, you may need to spend up to IDR 5 billion.

What is special is that these billion-rupiah graves allow owners or their families to enjoy a private burial site, private access, expansive grounds, grave maintenance, and maximum security. That is why those who buy here tend to come from the upper class.

3. Taman Memorial Graha Sentosa

Taman Memorial Graha Sentosa is the third luxury cemetery on this list. The site covers up to 50 hectares and is a development project of Artha Graha.

Graha Sentosa also holds international status and is supported by a variety of integrated facilities, such as pavilions, walkways, artificial lakes, and spiritual care.

You will also find funeral home services available to anyone, 24 hours a day. Naturally, the facilities on offer make many people curious about the price of its plots.

A single burial plot at Taman Memorial Graha Sentosa starts at around IDR 40 million. Keep in mind that this price may change depending on the needs of the deceased and the size of the grave block. The larger the plot, the higher the price.

4. Al-Azhar Memorial Garden

Is there no cemetery in South Jakarta for Muslims only? The answer is yes, at Al-Azhar Memorial Garden. From the name alone you can probably guess that this cemetery is meant specifically for Muslims. Even so, not just anyone can enter and buy a plot here.

For one burial plot alone, you need to set aside IDR 25 million. The reason is that Al-Azhar Memorial Garden offers 30 thousand burial plot units, rest area, gardens, and a mosque for funeral preparations. It is therefore no surprise that this luxury cemetery is considered an upscale area.

The Al-Azhar Muslim cemetery complex is located on Jalan Raya Peruri, Pinayungan, Telukjambe Timur District, Karawang Regency. It is also the only Muslim-only cemetery area in Indonesia with a land area of up to 25 hectares.

5. Heaven Memorial Park

Heaven Memorial Park is the next luxury cemetery you should know about. The difference is that this cemetery is specifically for the Chinese community. In other words, only non-Muslims can be buried there. The complex covers up to 125 hectares, which is very large for a cemetery.

Heaven Memorial Park offers three types of graves: Single, priced at IDR 27.3 million, Gold at IDR 35.9 million, and Platinum at IDR 39.9 million. You get what you pay for: the more expensive the plot, the better the maintenance and facilities.

6. Raudlatul Jannah Memorial Park

Raudlatul Jannah Memorial Park is a luxury cemetery exclusively for Muslims, located in Karawang Regency.

This cemetery is well known because only certain people are able to buy plots here. Like other elite cemeteries, Raudlatul Jannah also offers luxurious and complete facilities.

There, you will find a restaurant, gazebos, a mosque, and even 24-hour security. Five types of grave units are offered: Single 1, Single Package 2, Single Package 10, Semi Private Middle, and Semi Private HUK.

Prices range from IDR 39.1 million to IDR 209.7 million, depending on which option you choose.

7. Gunung Gadung Bogor

The last luxury cemetery is Gunung Gadung Bogor, specifically for the Chinese community. This cemetery covers an area of up to 120 hectares and is managed by five of Indonesia's largest cemetery foundations.

Families who wish to bury a relative do not need to handle the burial process themselves, as a committee already takes care of it. Even the equipment is provided by the cemetery management. One burial grave is priced at around IDR 50 million.
